I am a Chartered Landscape Architect (CMLI), living and working in Devon. I’m lucky enough to be one of the few remaining landscape architects in local authority practice, and particularly lucky that my “patch” covers some of the most beautiful countryside in the UK. I think there’s a huge amount of value in having in-house landscape expertise at a local authority level; particularly in an area which requires frequent consideration of impacts on protected landscapes.
I also carry out a small amount of private work, provided that it’s far enough away from my patch; often working with other landscape practices or planning consultants to produce planting plans for discharge of planning conditions. I also produce other planning-related graphics support, often using AutoCAD, Adobe Creative Suite, and GIS software. Examples of this work are available here.

Having graduated in 2007 and going straight into a job in environmental consultancy, I have gained valuable experience in both the private and public sectors. In the office, I review and critique large numbers of LVIAs and appraisals, AVR visualisations, hard and soft landscape plans, specifications and maintenance proposals.
Alongside this regulatory work, as part of the policy team I produce documents such as Character Assessments, Development Masterplans, Development / GI Strategies, relevant sections of the Local Plan, and carry out Sensitivity and Capacity studies. Outside of the office, I know that my private design and assessment work benefits directly from the knowledge I’ve gained on the regulatory side of planning.
